FAQs

Ask your questions and we will add them here!

Q: I have hit the brick goal and have the Charmed Slippers in my hand, is there anything that can stop me from winning the game?

A: Yes. You cannot win until you have played the Charmed Slippers on your next turn. In the meantime, your opponents could still play the Charmed Slippers against you and send you back. They could also use another menace card against you. If a Winged Monkey steals any of your bricks, you will have to lay more to reach the goal again. If the Fighting Tree is played against you, you will have to skip your turn and wait for play to come back around to you for your chance to win. If an opponent plays a Witch or Poppies on you, you must escape from that card before playing your Charmed Slippers to win!

Q: Can I play two single bricks on the same turn to get out of the poppies?

A: No, the poppies make the player sleepy and force that player to go slowly. It will take at least two turns to get out of the poppies.

Q: Can slippers be played again on somebody who already has them?

A: No.

Q: When can monkeys steal bricks? Where do they get them?

A: Monkeys can only steal bricks that have been played to an opponent’s journey board. Monkeys cannot steal bricks from somebody else’s hand. I player menaced by the Wicked Witch cannot play monkeys until they’ve escaped that menace. A player in the Poppies can only steal single bricks to play on the Poppies.

Q: When can Glinda (not) be played? Does she get discarded or stay with the player?

A: Obviously, Glinda cannot be played until the player has a Tornado on the journey board. Officially, if the player is menaced by with Wicked Witch or the Poppies, then Glinda cannot be played until the player has escaped. (Though, some players may choose to play with a house rule that Glinda can get you out of the poppies without granting a 10 brick.) The standard game play is that Glinda stays the person who plays her until sent to the discard by the slippers. For a faster game, Glinda can be discarded when played to show up again in the reshuffle.

Q: Can I make up my own rules for Home From Oz?

A: Absolutely! Feel free to add any house rules you would like, just make sure all of the players know what rules you are playing by before starting the game.  Also, please send us any favorite variations you come up with.  We may even share them on here or on our social media!

Q: The game is too short/ too long. What can I do about it?

A: The easiest way to change the length of the game is to change the brick goal.  Included in the basic deck is a card with instructions for a quick and intermediate game, using a brick goal of 10. Feel free to try a brick goal of higher than 30 for a longer game, but note that you may need to add a marker of some form for your 10 Brick cards if playing with 4 people, as the basic deck comes with 12 10 Brick cards.

Q: What is the difference between the expansion and bonus packs?

A: This is one of our most asked questions.  The expansion pack will allow you to play the basic game with up to six players (instead of 4). The bonus packs will be new characters, places, and items that will change the game play by adding new rules.  Both the expansion and bonus packs will be coming soon.

Q: What kind of cards will be in the bonus packs?

A: We are having so much fun developing new cards for the bonus packs.  Fans of the books will notice that their are characters from the entire series that can impact your game.  Langwidere will allow you to switch a purple (character) card with another player while Princess Ozma lets you draw any card off the top of the discard pile.  There will be characters from the original book as well that didn’t get added to the original deck.  The Munchkin lets you hold an extra card in your hand and the Winkie will give you power to discard another player’s purple card from their journey board.  There will also be places/items like the Emerald City which protects your yellow brick road from the Charmed Slippers and the Wizard’s Balloon which can redirect an incoming trade from a Wizard. There are so many cards to play with, you can create a different journey experience every time! (As we are testing the bonus packs, some characters or their function may change before production.)
